Beautiful Demoiselle - Insects
Calopteryx virgo

One of two UK damselflies with darkly coloured wings, the male Beautiful Demoiselle often looks almost completely black when in flight. Mostly seen in the south and west of Britain, and in Southern Ireland. Flies from May to August.

Usually found on faster flowing rivers and streams, especially with gravel or sandy bottoms (The images of this male were taken by a stream that runs past an old gravel pit).
